January 23, 2009: Hello!

I've just returned from a week in Pennsylvania recording vocals for the new 'Syn' album, 'Big Sky'.

It was -12 degrees celsius, all around was white and the snow was coming down like magic. It couldn't have been a better back drop for creativity.

I had been introduced to Steve Nardelli (The Syn) at Francis Dunnery's charity weekend last October at the start of his tour. Backstage, on the first night, Francis said, "Dorie, this is Steve, check out his song, you're going to be singing it in the set" and there were more brilliant songs to boot. By the end of the tour, Steve had played with us a couple of times and there were excited talks about the forthcoming album which Francis was going to produce, consequently, I was delighted to be asked to hold 10 days free at the beginning of January for recording.

Francis and I had 4 days to get started before Steve arrived, so we set out at the top of each song, listening, singing, debating, drinking copious amounts of coffee and recording our parts. Steve's songs are quite brilliant. Vocally they are each their own journey with startling unpredictability, both melodically and lyrically, whilst the music intricately ventures in and out of his progressive rock routes. By the time Steve arrived, we had 5 finished, and before he'd had a chance to listen to what we had done, we set him to work writing some lyrics for a part we had come up with for one of the songs.
It was truly a pleasure to sing on and be involved in, we had a really productive week and I'm left back in Blighty desperate to hear the finished product as the songs have been going round and round in my head!

After realizing acting was not her true calling, Dorie Jackson decided to follow in her fathers footsteps and pursue a career in the music industry. Having grown up with a musician as a father, (David Jackson, Van Der Graaf Generator), it was no surprise that Dorie might find her calling in something so close to her.

Dorie began her professional singing career as a backing vocalist for Francis Dunnery. Their first concert together was at the 2001 Cropredy Folk Festival in the UK. With her natural talent shining from the stage, Dorie was asked to do more tours and recording with Dunnery, both on his own records and other Aquarian Nation releases.

Francis introduced Dorie to many musicians and writers, including Aquarian Nation artists, Chris Difford and John & Wayne. While Francis was producing Chris Difford's (Squeeze) first solo record 'I Didn't Get Where I Am', he asked Dorie to sing backing vocals. Dorie, Chris and Francis worked incredibly well together and the three went on to tour as an acoustic trio to support Elvis Costello, Jools Holland and Chris Rea. Difford also asked Dorie to sing on his subsequent tours and albums, including recent releases 'South East Side Story' as well as his new solo album, 'The Last Temptation Of Chris'.

In 2002, Francis introduced Dorie to Aquarian Nation artists John and Wayne and she was asked to sing on their debut record 'Nearly Killed Keith.' Capitalising on the success of record sales, John, Wayne and Dorie went on to support Paul Young, Belinda Carlisle, Homespun and Marti Pellow. More recently, Dorie recorded backing vocals for John & Wayne's new album, which will be released later this year.

Dorie also found a good match with singer/songwriter, William Topley (The Blessing). Dorie joined Topley on several acoustic tours (with Luke Brighty). Topley asked Dorie to sing on his last three albums: 'Sea Fever', 'All in the Downs' and a recently recorded acoustic album 'Los Ciganos del Mar'.

Dorie has appeared on many other releases, including Amy Wadge's latest record 'No Sudden Moves.', as well as Steve Nardelli's (The Syn) recent recording Big Sky, set for release in the Spring 2009.

With feet firmly planted on the ground, it was only a matter of time before Jackson would begin the process of writing and recording her own songs. Dorie and Francis Dunnery began writing songs together back in 2001. In 2004, they finally sat down and started recording. Their years of effort writing and recording resulted in Dorie's debut solo album, The Courting Ground. The album is about all the things a girl goes through, such as unrequited love, body image issues, and meeting the one. The album has been extremely well received, many finding it difficult to believe this could actually be her debut album. The clever lyrics and layers of rich vocals create a truthful, unique and beautiful landscape.

Following the release of the Courting Ground in 2007, Dorie has begun touring her album as an acoustic trio with singer songwriters Emily Baker and Alice Shaw. The trio supported Francis Dunnery in October 2008 and Jackson & Baker will go on to support Chris Difford on his UK tour starting in March 2009. Check the tour section for details!
